The Great Firewall strikes back

Sunday 6th September, 00:25

It’s been 2 full days and I have already contemplated whether I should buy a ticket to go home over the Winter break…
I refuse to get too down though; I anticipated feeling this way because I experienced it when I arrived in Beijing too, both times (the second time being when I returned to Beijing after spending the Winter break at home), so this time I mentally prepared myself.

Still, it can be frustrating though – phone issues, laundry issues, internet issues; and to avoid sounding like a spoilt Westerner, let me clarify that by ‘internet issues’ I don’t mean poor or slow connections, though that is a problem too, but I mean that 80% of websites I visit don’t work, thanks to the GFW (Great Firewall), most importantly, Google!, and thus Googlemail. Though I realise this possibly still makes me sound like a spoilt Westerner…

About Ibtehaal

I graduated with a degree in Chinese and Economics, which involved spending a year studying Chinese in Beijing. This turned out to be the hardest but most rewarding thing I think I have ever done. I've now returned to China for another year, to study in Shanghai and figure out my next steps.

  1. Hahaha the great firewall of China!

I don’t think you sound like a spoilt westerner. We’re just used to certain things and it takes time to adjust… Though I think I would start hyperventilating if I couldn’t access Google. Have you tried using a proxy server?
